Safeguarding Organisations from Unsafe People

  • Community Waikato 33 Victoria Street Hamilton, Waikato, 3204 New Zealand (map)

Kim Dickinson, Safeguarding and Child Protection Consultant, Holistic Safeguarding

We only need to see the news to know organisations serving children are at risk of being exploited by unsafe people. In addition, to people with ill-intent seeking to exploit an organisation and the children it serves, organisations can also be vulnerable to possible allegations against staff as a result of unsafe practice

Sadly, these vulnerabilities are ever-present. However, the impact of Covid-19 has increased not only the vulnerability our children and families are facing, but also those being faced by organisations serving children and their families. Accumulating in challenging times for us and a dream scenario for those with ill-intent. This learning is always critical, but our current climate has merely heightened this need.

If you work with or your organisation serves children and young people, this course is for you! Community Waikato and Holistic Safeguarding are delighted to be working in partnership to bring you this learning opportunity. This 1-day event will guide you through exploring:

  • The risks of exploitation by unsafe people;

  • The fundamental measures that can help safeguard an organisation from being exploited; and

  • How organisations can work towards creating a ‘Safeguarding Culture’ that safeguards everyone (children, staff and the organisation) and promotes safe practice, reducing the possibilities of allegations against staff.

All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the Holistic Safeguarding – Sport and Recreation Safeguarding Toolkit. This Toolkit will serve as your organisation’s ongoing resource in taking forward all key learning points, as well as provide you with practical resources to help strengthen key safeguards.

While being tailored to Sport and Active Recreation, the Toolkit’s learnings and resources are far-reaching and transfer to all organisations serving children. Including but not exclusive to - NGOs/Charities, Community Organisations, Faith Settings, Government Organisations, etc. Hence this event is open to all members of Waikato’s children’s workforce.
